Jewish Dating Tips: How to Get a Gift for Your Date

June 24th, 2015 SawYouAtSinai

According to the book The Five Love Languages, gift giving is one of the five major ways to show someone that you love them. As such, giving a present to your date on Chanukah, their birthday, or really anytime conveys the love that you feel for them. But you can’t just get any gift! Here are a few different routes to consider when looking for a gift:

  • Ask your date’s family if your date has ever talked about something that they really want. On the other hand, you can ask the date in person, but ask it in a sneaky way. For instance, “I’m trying to get a present for a friend, but I can’t think of what to get. What kind of gift would you want to receive?”
  • Make the gift personal! Make the gift a reference to something that you’ve talked about to each other. For example, if your date told you that the first book he or she ever read was “The Cat in the Hat” by Doctor Seuss, maybe a Cat in the Hat coffee mug is the right gift. It will show that real thought went into the gift.
  • Be creative! Create a present yourself, or figure out a creative way to present the gift that will make your date laugh. Wrap the present in twenty layers of bubble wrap! Treasure hunt, anyone?
  • Give the gift with a handmade card. Hallmark cards are cute, but they don’t mean half as much as a card that you write from the heart. You’re not an artist? Who cares! It’s the thought that counts.
  • Sometimes, the best gifts are not physical but an experience. If your present is a vacation or a trip to the opera, the gift becomes an opportunity to make memories with your date and become closer to each other.
  • Though this may seem obvious, remember that you aren’t getting the gift for yourself! Think about the kinds of things your date likes.
  • A more expensive gift isn’t necessarily better!
